NINJA Tour - May 22, 2009, Mountain View, CA - Part One

It's almost the third anniversary of this amazing concert. I never got around to uploading too many photos from it for some reason and each year on the anniversary I have vowed to post them to make up for that. So, the first year came and went. Then the second year came and went. Maybe I shouldn't admit that and pretend that I always meant to post these on the third anniversary? Anyway, these are all new; I made sure not to repost any that were already posted in 2009.
So, the first thing we saw were these idiots spreading hate outside. As you can probably well imagine, they were universally reviled and mocked by the concert-goers. We are proud to say that no souls were saved that day, not even those that belonged to these sorry hypocrites.
First up was Street Sweeper Social Club, a band that only made the final decision on their name after the tour was announced. Aw, bless ya, Boots and Tom!
I had a helluva time trying to get a photo where Boots or Tom didn't have their back to the audience.
The concert started early, in daylight, and many people did not arrive until much later. These fans were showing their love early.

Unfortunately, I didn't get a good shot of Tom's "Arm the Homeless" guitar. He had a few of them, but that one was hard to get in the bright sunlight for some reason.

They all jumped a lot, but Carl might have jumped highest. "Air Carl Restivo."He used to follow me on Twitter, but like almost all the celebrities who have followed me at one time or another, eventually bored of my inane chatter. In my defense: it's FUCKING TWITTER. *ahem*

Solar Eclipse Shadows

As I value my sight, I didn't point the camera directly at the sun, but found shadows filtered through tree leaves to document the solar eclipse this afternoon. These are roughly in order from "near total" to "almost done".

Hmmm...not sure I like the "new" Blogger defaults as they will not let me use a label I've been using for some time now because it happens to have quotation marks in it. (Hint: the "abstract" category.) That's rather stupid, but whatever. Now I have two "abstract" categories for no good reason at all, just one has quotation marks and the other doesn't.

Wave Organ Pt. 1

The Wave Organ was constructed as an acoustic sculpture in the 1980s on a jetty built from grave markers that were scraped from the last cemetery in San Francisco that resisted moving to Colma. A picture of the Laurel Hill Cemetery can be seen in the middle of this page, which recounts the history of cemeteries in San Francisco, including this directly relating to the materials used in not just the Wave Organ but the jetty itself:

Plans to create a five-acre memorial park on Laurel Hill died due to lack of public support. Meanwhile, between 1939 and 1941, more than 35,000 remains were removed from Laurel Hill to Cypress Lawn. Remains were placed in redwood boxes and taken by hearse the same day to Colma. They were kept for six years in Cypress Abbey Mausoleum because World War II delayed construction of a new mausoleum. After the war, because of rising construction costs, simple concrete vaults were built beneath a five-acre burial mound for the remains. Over 1,000 bodies were interred privately.

Once the entire removal process had been completed, the tombstones were broken into pieces and used as paving materials for gutters lining the walks of Buena Vista Park. Other tombstone fragments were used to create the breakwater near the St. Francis Yacht Club and contractor Charles L. Harney was paid 80 cents per ton to dump crypts and heavy markers into the Bay. Sadly, few of the elaborate Egyptian, Gothic and Neoclassical monuments survived.

I went here on January 2, during the day, and definitely not during a full moon. I cannot attest to the sound quality of the art installation, but I have more photos to follow. I've got to break this cycle of not posting things!

Fire Dancers

A couple of months ago (yes, I am all sorts of behind in my uploads...sigh...) my friend Holly had a community themed birthday party replete with all sorts of entertainment. The highlight for me was the professional juggling/fire dance pair Mountain Mischief. Consider hiring them for your next bar mitzvah or party; they're good people and highly entertaining. They even juggled around Holly and didn't catch her on fire! Score!
